Time for a #ThrowbackThursday, so let’s go back to 1986 and look at this gorgeous yet practical 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon!

With the #VanLife movement in full swing, vans are becoming en vogue again, and this Weekender Westfalia Vanagon is one of the vans leading the trend. The owner Steve modernized this Vanagon by swapping the original engine with a 1.9L TDI conversion, upgrading the suspension, and adding an onboard battery backup that runs off solar power.

Officially named Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), the Vanagon is a descendant of the VW Bus and was produced from 1980 to 1990. It was called the Vanagon because it had the room of a van but drove like a station wagon. The Vanagon also had a ton of variations, with versions coming with an integrated kitchen, refrigerator, stove, and onboard water supply or, like this Weekender, that stripped all that out for more space for gear or for sleeping.
